This movie shows the changes in tree density before and after fire suppression.

These photos were taken at Lick Creek in the Bitterroot Valley of Montana over an eighty-year period. The first photo was taken in 1909, after about half the trees had been cut. Without fire, ponderosa pine is gradually replaced by dense Douglas-fir. Both logged and unlogged stands of ponderosa pine have changed in this way.
