Professional Information

Jack A. Schmidt has been a Forester of RM-4151 "Ecology and Management of Northern Rocky Mountain Forests" since 1969. He has supported research scientists' focusing on regenerating and stand management of western larch and associated conifers within the Inland Mountain West.

Research Interests
  • Seed and pollen cone production in young western larch.
  • Conifer seedfall in old growth stands.
  • Seed dispersal patterns in forest openings.
  • Germination characteristics of conifer seeds.
  • Establishment and early growth of conifer regeneration.
  • Direct seeding and planting of conifers.
  • Influence of harvest cutting and site preparation treatments on natural and artificial regeneration and of conifers.
  • Stand management influenced by thinning of conifers.

Professional History

Schmidt's career started with the Forest Service in the summer of 1968 serving as a fire lookout on the Blizzard Hill lookout tower in the Deer Lodge National Forest of Montana. He joined the research station that fall and has been stationed in Missoula, Montana his entire career. He supported research scientists with studies of early forest succession following harvest and site preparation treatments, including the influence of regeneration processes and development of forest vegetation on biodiversity. In 1996 he was assigned as manager of the Coram Experimental Forest located on the Flathead National Forest, an area designated to provide information needed to successfully manage western larch forests.

Ongoing Projects
  • International Larix Arboretum. The International Larix (larch) Arboretum, established in 1992 on a 1.2-acre site next to the headquarters of the Coram Experimental Forest near the Hungry Horse Ranger Station in the town of Hungry Horse, MT, was dedicated October 7, 1992 as part of an International Larix Symposium. Ten species of Larix from North America, Asia, and Europe, along with subspecies and hybrids were planted. This arboretum will not only provide a visual demonstration of Larix but is designed to provide opportunities for species comparisons and genetics research.
  • Walk With Larch Trails. A half century of research on the Coram Experimental Forest can be highlighted by enjoying a walk along a 0.8 mile Upland Young Forest trail mostly in a stand regenerated in the 1950's after harvesting and see the effects of different site preparation techniques on stand composition. The Trail continues through larch thinned to different spacings in 1961. A second 0.3 mile Riparian Old Growth trail winds along Abbot Creek supporting diverse vegetation important to wildlife habitats. A color brochure is available describing numerous stops.
  • Meteorological Monitoring. Weather data including wind direction, wind run, relative humidity, air temperature, solar radiation, precipitation, and soil temperature is monitored and recorded at five remote sites within the Coram Experimental Forest.
  • Stream Flow. Water quantity is measured at two one-foot parshall flumes within the Coram Experimental Forest.
