Professional History
Jimmie D. Chew has over twenty years experience in the National Forest System (Northern Region and Alaskan Region) in positions of District Silviculturist, Area Silviculturist, Forest Timber Management Planner, Forest Planning Team Leader, and Silviculturist in a Regional Office Silviculture Group. Since 1992, he has been a Forester with the Rocky Mountain Research Station, Research Work Unit 4151- Ecology and Management of Northern Rocky Mountain Forests. His position has responsibilities for technology transfer through the development of a knowledge based system that integrates knowledge to simulate vegetation change through disturbance processes at landscape scales.

Current Research
- Continued development and support of SIMPPLLE simulation system for Region One use in Forest Plan Revison and project analysis.
- Continued development and use of DESCRIBE software for use with FIA plots and stand examination surveys for Region One.
- Extrapolation of modeling results: identifying representative landscapes at a drainage level that can be used as a basis for extrapolating SIMPPLLE and MAGIS results, Bitterroot Ecosystem Management and Research Program.
- A Risk-Based Comparison of Potential Fuels Treatment Tradeoff Models at eight geographic areas across the United States Joint Fire Sciences Program.
- A Decision Support System for Spatial Analysis of Fuel Treatment Options and Effects at Landscape Scales, RMRS-MSO-14, funded R&D study in support of the National Fire Plan.
