Abstract:
- This dataset contains hourly meteorological tower data collected from 1991-2005 at the NADP WY00 site at the Glacier Lakes Ecosystem Experiments Site (GLEES), in the Snowy Range near Centennial, Wyoming.
-
Purpose:
- The GLEES, a 600 hectare research watershed at 3200-3400 meters elevation in the Snowy Range of southeastern Wyoming, was established in 1987 to examine the effects of atmospheric deposition on alpine and subalpine ecosystems. The site is not in a designated wilderness area, but was selected for research because it closely replicates conditions in federally designated Class I wilderness.

Description_of_Geographic_Extent:
- The GLEES constitutes approximately 600 hectares in and around the watersheds of East Glacier, West Glacier, and Brooklyn Lakes, located in the Medicine Bow National Forest in the Snowy Range in southeastern Wyoming. Common species in this area are Picea englemannii and Abies lasiocarpa. The meteorology tower where these data were collected is in the southern corner of the West Glacier Lake watershed. The collection point is a 5-meter tower co-located with the Snowy Range collection facility for the National Atmospheric Deposition Program (NADP). The NADP site designator for this facility is WY00. The tower is located at approximately 3280 meters elevation, on the southwest side of West Glacier Lake.

Attribute_Accuracy:
-
-
Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
- Precision of measurements corresponds to the number of decimal places indicated for each variable, e.g., scalar windspeed is considered precise to the nearest 0.01 meter per second. Accuracy of measurements is governed by the equipment used. Equipment was checked weekly to ensure correct function, and was repaired as necessary. Data recorded by obviously malfunctioning sensors were deleted.
-
Logical_Consistency_Report:
- Initial quality assurance / quality control (QA/QC) were done graphically for all data and obvious outliers were eliminated. Post-collection processing was required for precipitation. The sensor recorded gage depth, which was subject to changes due to evaporation and recharge of the gage antifreeze. Precipitation level was rounded to the nearest millimeter, and the differential from one hour to the next was recorded as the amount of precipitation received during that hour. It was assumed that when zero or negative values (e.g., due to evaporation) were recorded that no precipitation was received during that hour.
Further QA/QC was conducted by comparing the data graphically to data collected with instrumentation nearby at the GLEES 15-meter meteorology tower, located approximately 250 m southeast of the Glacier Lakes meteorology tower. Data from 8 Jan-4 Feb 1997 were found to have been recorded at a 90-minute sampling interval instead of 60-minute. The air temperature and RH data were corrected via interpolation; the remainder of the data were not considered salvageable and were deleted. A number of additional minor errors were corrected.
-
Completeness_Report:
- Gaps in the dataset for individual parameters are due to instrument malfunction, replacement, and/or calibration of the instrument. Gaps for all data indicate periods where the entire sensor array was not operating, e.g., failure of power supply, or datalogger malfunction. The files contain records for the entire period of measurement; where data were missing, null records were inserted to bring each datafile to a uniform size of 8670 hourly records (8784 in leap years).

Methodology_Description:
- The facilities used to collect these data were installed in 1991, although meteorological data have been collected in the area, by various agencies, since the 1960's. Each meteorological parameter was sampled every ten seconds, and mean or sum values, as appropriate, were recorded by a datalogger every hour. Blank spreadsheet cells indicate missing, inaccurate, or unobserved data. The tower used is 5 meters in height, but the height above the surface varies in winter depending on the snow depth. Height above the snow surface has been observed to be less than 2 meters in particularly snowy winter months. Instrumentation on the tower consists of Met One anemometer, wind direction indicator and combination humidity/temperature sensor. Dataloggers in use on the site are Campbell Scientific models CR-21 (1991-2002) and CR-23X (2002-present). Power is supplied by a 10W solar panel. Workers visit the site weekly, year-round, to inspect instrumentation and retrieve datalogger memory storage modules. Malfunctioning equipment is either repaired immediately or on the next weekly visit.
-
Process_Step:
-
-
Process_Description:
- Datalogger storage modules are retrieved from the site weekly, returned to the laboratory, and downloaded. Data are inspected for obvious outliers and are stored in ASCII comma-delimited format as separate weekly files. The weekly files are then combined into one file for each year and stored as Microsoft Excel spreadsheets. Precipitation then goes through the post-collection process of rounding to the nearest millimeter, and then calculating the differential from one hour to the next as the amount of precipitation received during that hour. For more information see the Logical Consistency Report above.
