Dr. Deborah Shields is Principal Mineral Economist for the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture, Forest Service, Research and Development Division. The Forest Service manages 191 million acres of land for the American public. Much of this land overlays economic energy and mineral deposits, which can lead to conflicts over land use. Deborah directs the agency's mineral economic and policy research program, and provides scientific and technical input to the agency's strategic planning process. She leads the agency's effort to include nonrenewable resources in sustainable resource management, serving as co-chair of the US Sustainable Minerals Roundtable. In addition, she serves as technical advisor on sustainability to the US Delegation to the Mining Ministers of the Americas and participated in the MMSD North America project. In addition, she Dr. Shields has a MS in Mineral Economics from the Colorado School Mines and a PhD in Natural Resources Management from Colorado State University. Her recent publications have addressed mining in sustainability, mineral policy, value theory, conflict resolution, and karst management.

Prior to working for the Forest Service, Dr. Shields worked for the U. S. Dept. of Interior, Bureau of Mines, specializing in international mineral supply, and trade analysis and forecasting.

Most recently, Deborah has been selected as one of the Henry Krumb Lecturers for 2006-7 by the Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration Inc. During the upcoming year she will be making presentations at SME Chapters around the country on minerals and sustainable development.
