Current Research

Urban woodland ecology and restoration; urban biogeochemistry; classification, mapping, and interpretation of anthropogenic soils; integration of ecological, soil, and social sciences; and integration of science and public policy.

Research Interests

Sequestration of carbon in urban landscapes; potential affects of urban contaminants on public health; mitigation of heavy metal contamination in urban soils.

Why This Research is Important

Urban woodlands can serve as natural experiments to investigate effects of climate change on forests. Urban soils play important role as the brown infrastructure of urban landscapes performing ecosystem services related to carbon sequestration, sink for nutrients and contaminants, and water storage.
