She began her career with the Forest Service as a Geologist on the Idaho Panhandle National Forest. Nan served in positions managing diverse natural resource, community assistance and operational programs and as a line officer, or agency decision maker, at each of the agency’s four organizational levels and within three of the agency’s four branches. Her three decades of experience working in wildfire include roles as an Information Officer, Line Officer, Incident Command Team member, and Family Liaison for serious accidents and fatalities. She received her undergraduate liberal arts/geology degree from Centre College of Kentucky and the University of Montana. Nan has spent much of her adult life in Montana, where she owns a small farm on the Bitterroot River. She grew up in rural Kentucky; annual family camping trips throughout the United States and Canada instilled in her a great love for wild places and natural resources. Life outside work revolves around horses, dogs, hiking, gardening, water play, community volunteer work, writing, contra dancing and cross-country skiing.
