Biofuel Collaboration Takes Shape

A few years ago Forest Service researcher Thomas W. Jeffries, Ph.D. and his Forest Products Laboratory research team started a collaboration with EdeniQ, a clean technology company serving the global biofuels industry. Dr. Jeffries and researchers from the University of Wisconsin - Madison working jointly on woody cellulose fermentation, developed a yeast technology for bioethanol production. Patent protection was obtained and in 2011 five Forest Service/UW-Madison patents were licensed to EdeniQ through the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation (WARF). The collaboration is continuing via a CRADA. In May of 2012, EdeniQ received $30M in venture capital funds for biomass conversion development to help reduce U.S. dependence on foreign oil and nonrenewable energy.
