Guava/Eucalypt/Myrtle Rust

Endemic to Hawaii, the flowering evergreen tree Ohia lehua is threatened by this pathogen

Guava/Eucalypt/Myrtle Rust, caused by Puccinia psidii, is threatening diverse tree/shrub species in the Myrtaceae (Myrtle family) in tropical and subtropical areas worldwide.

The pathogen was introduced to Hawaii where it threatens native forest trees, such as ohia (Metrosideros polymorpha).

Recent studies show that multiple pathogen biotypes exist, with different host ranges, and studies are ongoing to determine the global distribution of pathogen biotypes.

To date, researchers have confirmed that the rust disease on eucalypt in Brazil did not originate from guava as was long believed; however, the evolutionary origin of each biotype remains unknown.
