Summary

Forest Inventory and Analysis Program scientists throughout the country are collaborating with the Remote Sensing Applications Center to develop modeling and mapping procedures for the 2011 Tree Canopy Cover product of the National Land Cover Database (NLCD). The NLCD provides nationally complete, current, and consistent public information on the Nation's land use and land cover. The Tree Canopy Cover data provides foundational information for many broadscale analyses for US forests and for informing management decisions, modeling efforts, and sampling strategies for a wide variety of applications such as carbon, wildlife, and wildland fire. Pilot tests are underway now in five ecologically diverse areas and prototype mapping should begin early this fall.
