Forest Statistics of the United States
A supporting technical document to the 1989 RPA Assessment
This document presents tables of data describing the area
of forestland, volume of wood, removals, and timber product outputs. Historic trends since
1952 are presented in selected tables. The data were derived from information collected in
periodic surveys of the forest resources in each state and Forest Service region. Nine
National Forest System regions and 6 Forest and Range Experiment Stations provided
inventory data for the RPA Assessment. Surveys are conducted on non-National Forest System
land by the Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) Research units at the Forest and Range
Experiment Stations.
The information for National Forests in the seven western regions came
from surveys conducted as past of the forest planning process by the regional timber
management staffs. The information for eastern National Forests came from surveys
conducted by FIA units.
