National Forest Store

Recreation Solutions manages the National Forest Store -- your best source for National Forest Visitor, Wilderness, and Special Interest Area maps. The National Forest Store offers maps featuring points of interest, roads, trails, activities, and topographic National Forest Wilderness maps featuring scales greater than 1 inch per mile. The National Forest Store offers more than 400 map titles from every region within the Forest Service. Visit the store on-line at or call (406) 329-3024.

Special Uses

Recreation Solutions brings 20 years of experience and expertise to Special Uses on National Forest System lands. These uses include vacation cabins, private camps, waterlines, powerlines, roads, communication uses, recreation events, and outfitter and guide services such as hiking, horseback trips, rafting, kayaking, fishing, and hunting, to name a few. With declining budgets and personnel shortages, forests can now utilize the services of Recreation Solutions to meet their management goals, complete their projects, and satisfy the needs of the public. Recreation Solutions can take a project from start to finish, including: meeting with the permit holder or applicant, researching compliance with that forest’s management plan, meeting with forest specialists to obtain their input, complete the NEPA process, including Decision Memo’s and Environmental Assessments, Capacity Analysis, preparing the Special Use Permit in the SUDS database, preparing the Bill for Collection, and obtaining the appropriate signatures. With the advent of Special Uses Cost Recovery, forests can enter into an agreement with Recreation Solutions and have the permit holder or applicant pay for the process of receiving a new permit or monitoring of an existing permit. Recreation Solutions can relieve the backlog of Special Uses and Right-of-Way acquisition at the forest level.

National Visitor Use Monitoring

Recreation Solutions has provided National Visitor Use Monitoring (NVUM) inventory design services for forests in Regions 1, 3, 4 and 5 for over 10 years. We travel to individual forests, provide training in the inventory design protocol and make edits in the web-based application. In addition, we provide technical support to individual forests throughout the entire inventory design phase. We have assisted with NVUM coordination duties including quarterly proxy reporting, by sending out letters, and ensuring proxy numbers are collected and reported as scheduled. We also provide NVUM interviewer training at the national level and for individual forests as requested.
