National Recreation Area

Welcome to Grand Island National Recreation Area!

Grand Island is located in Lake Superior, about one-half mile from the mainland community of Munising, Michigan.  The island’s scenic natural beauty and interesting history make it an attractive place for camping and other outdoor activities.  Recreation opportunities include: 

Day Use

Hiking and Mountain Biking Hiking and Mountain Biking Trails provide wonderful opportunities for day trips and give access via unsurfaced trails to some of the island’s most spectacular scenery. Kayaking and Boating Island’s cliffs, beaches, natural harbors and campsites offer day use and camping opportunities for kayakers and other boaters. Island Bus Tours Accessible tours provide a convenient way to sample the Island’s natural beauty and historic highlights.  Hop aboard for this 2-1/2-hour tour. 

Overnight Use

Camping can be a highlight of your visit to Grand Island.  The Island features 17 small group campsites and 2 large group campsites. 

Getting to the Island

Through the National Fee Demonstration Project, a daily entrance fee of $2.00 per person is charged.  Season, family and boat entrance passes are also available. 

Passenger Ferry

The ferry, operated through concessionaire permit by Grand Island Ferry Service, departs from Grand Island Landing on the mainland, located on M-28, about 3 miles west of Munising’s blinking light.  Look for the Grand Island NRA sign.  For information about the ferry or for reservations, call 906-387-3503.
