Three cabins are available for rent year-round on the Saco Ranger District.  Reservations are now made solely through Reserve.gov, so please read the How do I make a reservation? section below carefully. The change in reservation systems allows visitors to reserve the cabins 24 hours a day, by using the same system they use to reserve campsites on the Forest . At least 95 percent of the cabin fee will be retained on the White Mountain National Forest to maintain recreation facilities.

The Black Mountain and Doublehead cabins, built in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), and theRadeke cabin, purchased in 1969 from the University of New Hampshire, are now maintained by the Forest Service and were renovated in the 1990s. They are very rustic, with only wooden bunks, two small tables in the common area, benches, and a wood stove. Click on the links for more detailed information on thecabins.

Renovations to the cabins have greatly improved the atmosphere, and will provide you with a quality experience. The money collected through the cabin rentals will be used to maintain the buildings and other recreation opportunities on the White Mountain National Forest.

Special Winter Consideration: The cabins are un-insulated, primitive, log shelters. When renting a cabin in the colder months, expect winter conditions and be prepared with winter gear. The temperatures inside the cabin can often mimic the exterior temps. Be prepared as though for a camping trip, you can just leave the tent at home!

How do I make a Reservation?

Rental of the Black Mountain , Doublehead, and Radeke cabins on the White Mountain National Forest is available through the National Recreation Reservation Service (NRRS), a new reservation service for the US Forest Service and the National Park Service.
