One of the most popular activities on the White Mountain National Forest is taking a scenic drive. The many routes through the National Forest allow visitors to enjoy mountains, rivers, valleys, recreation sites, overlooks and historic sites. Whether you are planning an all day excursion, or choose to tour small sections of the Forest in shorter trips, please drive defensively.
Roads are often busy with both visitor and through traffic, especially during the fall foliage season. If you want a closer look at a beautiful view, take time to pull safely off the road and let other traffic pass. Be especially alert for wildlife crossing roads.
Route Suggestions
The Kancamagus Scenic Byway offers one of the most beautiful routes through New Hampshire's White Mountains, especially during the fall foliage season. A trip across the "Kanc" is a highlight for most visitors to the White Mountain National Forest. Rushing rivers, a covered bridge, breathtaking vistas and possibly a glimpse of an elusive moose are some of the cherished memories. The 34 mile long scenic byway connects with the other scenic areas in the White Mountain region from which a couple of driving loops can be made depending on your final destination.
