Downloading and Using 2005 Forest Plan Documents

There are two electronic versions of the Plan documents available, and you may install either or both of them, depending on your computer's operating system.

GeoBooks

The White Mountain National Forest GeoBooks are a new medium for publishing planning information. They contain all the information in the paper version, but in a unique electronic format that provides great flexibility in reading text and particularly in viewing maps. Be sure to read the online "Help" to learn how to navigate through the "book" and how to use the maps to best advantage. There are now three GeoBooks, and any or all may be installed. There is the Land and Resource Management Plan (the Forest Plan), which includes the Record of Decision, there is the Final Environmental Impact Statement, which includes the Executive Summary, and there is a new Map Book, containing the maps used in the other documents as well as additional material.

The GeoBooks can be used only with recent Windows operating systems. Systems must meet the following requirements: Windows 95/98/NT/XP (or higher); a monitor with a minimum 800 X 600 screen resolution. Minimum recommended: Pentium 100 CPU, 32 MB RAM.

To install the White Mountain National Forest GeoBooks:

  1. Ensure you do not already have a GeoBook Reader installed (for example, if you installed the draft documents). You must uninstall this as the new GeoBooks use an updated Reader.

  2. Click below on the GeoBook you want to install. Unzip the file and open the GeoBook folder (you must install the GeoBooks on your C-Drive for them to work properly. You may select a location, but by default, they will be installed in a new folder called "Sanborn" in your Programs folder.)

  3. Double-click the "setup.exe" file. The program will first install the Reader, then the GeoBook you have selected.

  4. To download and install another GeoBook, repeat Steps 2 and 3. This time, however, the program will detect that the correct version of the Reader has been installed, and will just install the additional GeoBook (you only need one Reader).

  5. If you are installing a revised final GeoBook (for example, the revised FEIS), follow the procedure above. When you double-click the "setup.exe" file, the revised file will be installed and a shortcut to the new file will appear on your desktop, replacing the previous shortcut. The old file will still be in the Sanborn folder, and you should delete it to save space.

NOTE: You will also need Adobe Acrobat Reader (a free download from Adobe.com) installed on your computer, as many of the tables used are PDF (Portable Document Format) files.

Download the GeoBooks:

Download the Plan GeoBook now

(About 32 MB)

Download the FEIS GeoBook now

(About 41 MB. NOTE: This has been revised to correct minor errors (Rev. 01, 04/11/06))

Download the Maps GeoBook now

(About 34 MB)

PDF Files

If you cannot install the GeoBooks, or if you wish to view the Plan documents in the same form as the printed version, a complete set of PDF (Portable Document Format) files is also available. These differ from the printed version of the documents in that they are in full color. You must have Adobe Acrobat Reader to open the PDF files.

  1. The PDF files can be saved to your hard drive, or may be viewed from this CD to save space.

  2. Double click on the "PDF_Index.html" file, and it will open with your web browser.

  3. Note that the large documents, the Plan and the FEIS, are broken into chapters, as the complete document would be very large.

  4. You can click on the chapter you wish to view from within the Index, and it will open.

  5. You can then view it or save it to your C-Drive.

To download a "zipped" set of all the PDF files, use the link below. Again, you should have a broadband connection to retrieve this file.
