Forest Supervisor Closure Order
Forest Supervisor Tom Wagner has signed an Emergency Forest Supervisor Closure Order relating to the transport of out of state firewood onto the White Mountain National Forest. The Order prohibits the transport or movement of any species and type of firewood originating outside of New Hampshire or Maine onto the White Mountain National Forest. Individuals discovered with such firewood will be in violation of the order and subject to written and/or oral warnings, tickets, and fines. The State of NH is implementing a similar order for firewood transport onto state reservations. The order is in response to the threat posed to forest resources by two non-native invasive insects: Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) and Asian Longhorned Beetle (ALB), both of which were recently discovered within 200 miles of the WMNF boundary. A small infestation of EAB was discovered just south of Montreal, Quebec, Canada, and a large infestation of ALB was discovered in Worcester, MA. The infestation of ALB in Worcester is the largest infestation documented outside the species home range in Asia. The host trees of each insect are some of the most iconic trees of the White Mountains and northern New England, including maple, birch, willow, aspen, poplar, and ash.
