White Mountain National Forest At A Glance

New Hampshire and Maine
   
Clouds over the White Mountains
     
Location:  

Northern New Hampshire and southwestern Maine

 
     
Unique Features:  

Mt. Washington - highest peak north of the Smokey Mountains and east of the Mississippi.
Tuckerman Ravine - unique spring backcountry skiing.
Alpine Surroundings - eight square miles, largest area east of the Rocky Mountains, and south of Canada.
Kancamagus Scenic Byway - 34 miles long, it traverses the heart of the White Mountains.

 
     
Natural Resources:  

Spruce Hardwoods, Northern Hardwoods and Paper Birch.

 
     
Wildlife:  

184 species of birds: 38 species year round, 35 migrants or winter species, and 110 during the summer months.

Black bears, frogs, turtles, snakes and mammals. A wildlife viewing blind is located near Deer Hill in Maine.

Peregrine Falcon Reintroduction Program - nearly 60 captive-bred falcons released from cliff sites. Adult peregrines have returned to some cliffs to raise their young.

Moose sightings - Kancamagus Highway and northernmost sections of the White Mountains are well known for viewings.

 
     
Scenic Views:  

Nine scenic areas managed to protect outstanding scenery. Views spectacular during fall foliage.

Route 302 - offers spectacular views of the Presidential Mountain Range.

Patte Brook Auto Tour - a self-guided tour on the Androscoggin Ranger District, highlights different aspects of multiple-use resource management.

 
     
Wilderness:  

The Great Gulf - 5,552 acres
The Presidential Range/Dry River Wilderness - 29,000 acres
The Sandwich Range - 35,800 acres
The Pemigewasset Wilderness - 45,000 acres
Caribou-Speckled Wilderness - 14,000 acres
Wild River Wilderness - 23,700 acres

 
     
Land Recreation:  

Over 1,200 miles of hiking trails.
Mountain biking, wildlife watching, fishing, hunting, picnicking, swimming and canoeing.
23 campgrounds,
14 picnic grounds.

 
     
Winter Recreation:  

Snowshoeing, snowmobiling, 2 permitted alpine/cross country ski areas, 4 permitted alpine ski areas, 2 permitted cross country and 1 undeveloped spring skiing area (Tuckerman Ravine).

 
     
Heritage Resources:  

Two National Registers of Historic Places sites:
Brickett Place - Route 113 near the Maine/New Hampshire border.
Russell Colbath House - Kancamagus Scenic Byway, in Albany, NH.
