About Us

[IMAGE]: Random Image The WMNF has the only avalanche forecasting program in the eastern US. For 6 months of the year, Forest Service Snow Rangers provide daily avalanche bulletins, warnings of other dangers including crevasses and ice fall, search and rescue and perhaps most important, education and information to thousands of hikers, climbers and skiers. We have no doubt that this very popular and demanding program has saved many lives and allowed many more people to enjoy unique recreation opportunities.
The success of the Snow Ranger program is aided by several long-standing partnerships with the AMC, the Harvard Mountaineering Club and the Mt Washington Volunteer Ski Patrol (MWVSP). The ski patrol volunteers provide thousands of hours each spring helping with search and rescue, and public information in the ravines

HISTORY
The White Mountain National Forest was established by Presidential proclamation on May 16, 1918. As with most National Forests in the Eastern United States, it owes its existence to the passage of the Weeks Act in 1911 which enabled the federal government to purchase private land and establish National Forests principally in the Eastern United States.
