Hiker / Visitor Alerts and Current Conditions
National Public Lands Day -- Saturday, September 25 -- is a day when thousands of volunteers visit their favorite parks, beaches, wildlife preserves, and national forests to help improve these treasured places. It's also a day when many fees are waived for visitors. Come out and lend your hands to help the White Mountain National Forest. Details in the news release.
Culvert replacement on the Bog Dam Loop Road will begin the first week of September 2010 and last 4 to 6 weeks during which through travel will not be possible. Read more in the news release.
BEAR ALERT
There has been a recent increase in bear encounters at some campgrounds and backcountry campsites. Bears have entered tents looking for food and are not easily frightened away from a campsite so it’s imperative that campers store food properly. Backcountry campers should store their food in a food locker (if provided), bear-proof canister or hang it properly so the bear cannot get the food (see diagram). Make sure you bring sturdy rope to hang food and any product with a smell (eg. toothpaste, toiletries). In a developed campsite put all food in your car as soon as you have finished eating. Do not store food or toiletries in your tent. Failure to store food properly can result in a fine under 36 CFR 261.58 (cc) of up to $5,000. Read latest news release.
The Resolution Shelter (located off the Davis Path nearly 4 miles from the trailhead) has been posted closed due to safety concerns associated with the deteriorating condition of the shelter. No camping is allowed within the shelter, or within the 1/4 mile Forest Protections Area (FPA) around the shelter and 200' from trails. Alternate sites are available at Stairs Mountain.
Caution! Patte Mill Brook Road (FR 7) will be under construction through 4 October under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). The road will be open to through traffic, but expect delays.
WARNING: An Emergency Forest Supervisor Closure Order prohibits the transport or movement of any species and type of firewood originating outside of New Hampshire or Maine onto the White Mountain National Forest. Individuals discovered with such firewood will be in violation of the order and subject to written and/or oral warnings, tickets, and fines. The order is in response to the threat posed to forest resources by the Emerald Ash Borer and the Asian Longhorned Beetle See news release at right and More.
