Soldier Lake Campground

Soldier Lake Campground is easily accessible from M-28, and yet is a quiet relaxing site that is well away from any noise of the highway. It gives the camper a feeling of remoteness and is still close enough to roads leading to some of the best sight-seeing in the Upper Peninsula. Soldier Lake Campground is approximately 30 miles west of Sault Ste. Marie. The entrance is off FR-3138. Stop and see the historical monument that overlooks the tiny Monument Lake.

Camping
There are 44 sites among red pine, aspen, and maple trees. No reservations are accepted. Campsites are available on a first-come first-serve basis. Each site has a table and fire ring. There is drinking water and vault toilets, as well as easy access to the lake throughout the recreation area.

Picnic Area
Two large picnic areas can accomodate large groups with tables, grills, water, and vault toilets. A large grassy area for games has been provided for your enjoyment. A large picnic shelter, built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930's, is available for protection from a sudden shower. The shelter has tables and a fireplace for when the weather turns chilly. Please be sure that all fires, whether in grills, fire rings, or the picnic shelter, are dead out before leaving.

Swimming
There is a sandy beach perfect for sunbathing, wading, and swimming. Change houses are located at the end of the picnic shelter. Please remember, swimming is at your own risk. There are no lifeguards.

Fishing
Soldier lake is a 15-acre lake. Bass and perch are caught here.

Boating
Boat access is by carry-in only, no motors are permitted.

Hiking
There is a footpath that winds around the lake for a quiet relaxing stroll to watch a sunset or enjoy an early morning jog.

A 1/4 mile spur will take you to the North Country National Scenic Hiking Trail. Access is at the day use area, the trail is marked by blue markers.

General Information
There are several grocery and supply stores as well as restaurants in the area. Strongs is located 5 miles west and Raco is 7 miles east of the campground.

Soldier Lake Recreation Area is a concession operated fee area. Golden Age and Golden Access Passports are accepted.

A campground host is present during the summer months. Feel free to ask the campground host for the times and locations of recreation events in the area. Besides the activities planned in the local communities, he/she can also offer you guidance and direction to other interesting places to visit.
