Bay Furnace Campground & Picnic Area

Bay Furnace Campground and Picnic Area is located in Alger County. It is 5 miles west of Munising on M-28 on the south shore of Lake Superior, at Christmas. You can enjoy the scenic view of Lake Superior with its spectacular sunrises, sunsets, and occasional northern light displays.

This convenient location makes it a perfect site for the traveler who would like to camp overnight. It is also a perfect place to stay while enjoying the recreational opportunities available in the Munising area. Among many others are the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, Alger Underwater Preserve, the boat cruises, Miner's Castle, and many delightful waterfalls.

Site History
In 1869 the iron smelting town of Onota occupied this picturesque site. For almost 8 years the town prospered and developed into a community of about 500 people.
In 1877 a fire destroyed the town leaving only iron kiln ruins to be seen today.

Camping
There are 50 campsites, each with a fire ring and table.  Toilets and drinking water are conveniently located throughout the campground. A sanitary dumping station and pressurized drinking water are available for self-contained vehicles.

Picnic Area
The picnic area has tables, grills, drinking water, toilets, and a sandy beach. This area overlooks Lake Superior making it an ideal place for a picnic or to spend the day.

Fishing
Lake trout and salmon fishing is good in Lake Superior. For information on fishing in the Great Lakes, the inland lakes and their tributaries, contact any Hiawatha National Forest District Office or the Forest Supervisor's Office in Escanaba.

Boating
Boat ramps are available at Munising and AuTrain Bays.

Diving
The Campground serves as a campsite for divers exploring the shipwrecks of the Alger Underwater Preserve.

General Information
Camp supplies, food, and fishing supplies can be found near the Campground. Firewood is available from a concessionaire who travels through the Campground.

Pete's Lake Campground is a fee area and is operated and maintained by a private concessionaire. Golden Passports are accepted.  The picnic area and historic site are free.
