CampingCamping Recreation Opportunity Guide

Camping is a favorite activity in the National Forest. The goal of the Green Mountain National Forest is to offer visitors a variety of camping experiences.

All camping is first come, first served, and there are no reservations!

There is a maximum stay of 14 consecutive days in a 30-day period!

Attention !

Please do not transport firewood into Vermont from out of state. Please read the following information regarding a very real threat to forests and urban trees.

Click here for information on invasive insects pests transported in firewood.

Please note:  Improvements are being proposed to the Somerset Airfield dispersed camping area on Forest Road 71. For information on this project, please go to our " Decisions from 2009 " webpage.

The Green Mountain National Forest consists of a North Half (the Rochester and Middlebury Ranger Districts) and a South Half (the Manchester District). Keep this in mind as you explore the Recreation webpages and see listings of North and South activities.

Primative/ Dispersed Campsites

There are many areas available on the Green Mountain National Forest for rustic or dispersed camping. Visitors can camp anywhere on the forest unless the area is posted closed to camping, while staying the recommended 200 feet from roads, trails, and bodies of water to disperse impact. These areas provide a place to camp and enjoy nature’s solitude at no charge. There is a camping limit of 14-days in a 30-day period on the Forest. Camp in existing sites, and do not cut any vegetation. Please leave the campsites clean by using the Leave No Trace Principles, such as "carry out what you carry in."
