Fisheries

The Green Mountain National Forest is noted for its clean, cold-water streams and rivers and hundreds of miles of excellent fishing for wild Brook trout, Rainbow trout and Brown trout. In addition, the Forest contains 45 lakes and ponds, and three reservoirs that provide the opportunity to fish for Walleye, Smallmouth bass, Chain pickerel, Yellow perch and Brown bullhead in addition to Brook trout.  A fishing license is required in Vermont for persons over the age of 16 and for regulations governing fishing in Vermont, please check the Vermont Fish and Game Handbook or visit the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department for special restrictions on some lakes, ponds, reservoirs, rivers, and streams.

Fisheries lake
The Green Mountain National Forest has a large and diverse fisheries and aquatic ecology program.  Restoration of sea-run Atlantic salmon, maintenance and improvement of native brook trout populations (a species of local and regional importance) and their spawning and rearing habitats are some of the primary components of the Fisheries Program. We also monitor a vast array of stream characteristics and fish habitat conditions which provide a range of fisheries management needs and recreational fishing opportunities for the public. Much of our annual program of work is accomplished through active partnerships with State and Local organizations using a number of Cooperative and Cost Share Agreements.
