Monitoring and Evaluation
Monitoring and evaluation are required by the National Forest Management Act to determine how well the Land and Resource Management Plan (Forest Plan) is being implemented. Chapter 4 (Monitoring and Evaluation Chapter) of the 2006 Forest Plan provides the over-arching, strategic questions that must be addressed through monitoring in order to ensure effective implementation of the Forest Plan.

The Monitoring and Evaluation Guide, linked below, provides more specific direction for implementation of the monitoring strategy outlined in the Forest Plan.  The 2006 Forest Plan may be amended or revised to adapt to new information and changed conditions identified through monitoring and evaluation efforts. Through this adaptive management approach, the Forest Plan is kept current.

A key requirement of a monitoring strategy is that the public be given timely, accurate information about Forest Plan implementation. This is done through the release of an annual monitoring and evaluation report. The Annual Monitoring and Evaluation Report provides a forum for the review of current-year findings.

Note: The Forest Service did not produce a 2005 Annual Monitoring and Evaluation Report due to the release of the revised Forest Plan. The Plan established new monitoring items that are addressed in the Monitoring and Evaluation Report for Fiscal Year 2006, released in September 2007.
