Motor Vehicle Use Map for Wheeled Motorized Vehicles

On March 1, 2007, there was a change in law enforcement procedures for wheeled motorized vehicles on the Finger Lakes National Forest. Motor vehicle use designations, previously defined by Supervisor’s Closure Orders are now shown on the Motor Vehicle Use Map, made available free to the public on March 1, 2007. This map will be updated on an annual basis, unless changes are made in the interim to open or close roads. Any changes before the annual publication date would require that a new map be prepared and made available to the public. The publication of this map is only a change in administrative procedures and doesn’t change whether individual roads or trails are open or closed.

The publication of this map is in response to a change in national policy regarding the management of motor vehicles on all National Forests. The Forest Service’s final travel management rule revises regulations at 36 CFR parts 212, 251, 261, and 295 to require designations of roads, trails, and areas for motor vehicle use. The designation of these roads and trails will be shown on a motor vehicle use map available free to the public and on the internet.

This change in law enforcement procedures applies only to National Forest System roads, trails and lands. On the Finger Lakes National Forest, almost all roads are under town and county jurisdiction, with only a few roads under jurisdiction of the U.S. Forest Service. Since there are no approved trails for wheeled motorized use, the map will not show any motorized trails. There is no change in management of snowmobile trails, which are not shown on this map.

Maps are available at the Hector Ranger District office at 5218 State Route 414, Hector, NY 14841 during business hours (Monday to Friday, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm).
