Allegheny National Forest
Several reservoirs (consisting of over 8,000 acres)and over 700 miles of streams offer outstanding fishing opportunities.
Over 70 species of game and non-game fish are present throughout the Forest. The
State record Northern Pike (22 pounds, 8 ounces, 45-l/2 inches) and Walleye (l7
pounds, 9 ounces, 36 1/4 inches) were taken from the Allegheny Reservoir. Get
your frying pan ready for brown, rainbow, and brook trout, muskellunge, small
and largemouth bass, perch, sunfish and crappie.
More than 300 species of mammals, including raccoon, gray squirrel, snowshoe
hare, red and gray fox, river otter, beaver, mink and muskrat as well as game
species, such as the white-tailed deer, black bear and wild turkey provide
excellent opportunity for hunting with a camera, gun, or bow.
Hundreds of songbirds, along with woodpeckers, hawks, great blue herons and
owls enjoy the woodlands. Bald eagles have been spotted in the Kinzua Dam
area.
Items of Interest
- Do not bring firewood from home to the Allegheny National Forest. Do not unwittingly spread the emerald ash borer, sirex wood wasp, hemlock woolly adelgid or other firewood borne invasive species. Possession of firewood from outside the area of the Allegheny National Forest is prohibited. Firewood is available at or near camping facilities.
