In 2004, the Chippewa National Forest Fire and Fuel Program (consisting of the Walker/SO, Deer River/Marcell, and Blackduck Districts), completed 22 mechanical treatments and 15 prescribed fires for approximately 1,136 and 1,625 acres respectively. In addition, the Forest suppressed 88 wildfires ranging in size from ½ acre to 28 acres for a total of 116 acres.

The program continues to grow in the fuels arena and has been actively implementing the tools provided through recent legislation such as the Healthy Forests Initiative (HFI) and Healthy Forests Restoration Act (HFRA). The program continues to focus on hazardous fuels treatment in the urban interface through community protection plans and the prevention program. Proposed activities in 2005 include hazardous fuels treatment through mechanical means or prescribed fire on approximately 2,800 acres.
