Double Lake Recreation Area

Warning

Fishing Advisory:
Largemouth bass at Ratcliff Lake, Bouton Lake, Boykin Springs, and Double Lake have recently shown elevated levels of mercury.  This is a common occurrence in East Texas lakes.  Only largemouth bass and bowfin are affected.  Please observe Texas Department of Health's advisory that adults should limit consumption of largemouth bass from these lakes to no more than two 8-oz. meals per month.  Children should limit consumption of largemouth bass to no more than two 4-oz. meals per month. Women who are pregnant, nursing, or may become pregnant should not consume any fish from these areas.

Double Lake dock.

Double Lake Recreation Area was built in 1937 by the Civilian Conservation Corps and offers a little of everything including camping, fishing, picnicking, hiking or just getting back in touch with nature.

There are 65 family sites (some with electric and sewer hookups) and nine groups sites. Thirty-seven campsites are accessible for persons with disabilities. Each site has a picnic table, level pad, lantern holder and a campfire ring or cooking grill.

Shelters for groups up to 100 and a lodge for group meetings of 50 or less are available for a fee.  Reservations are required by contacting the National Recreation Reservations Service (NRRS) at 877/444-6777 from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. seven days a week.  Reservations may also be made on the Internet at www.recreation.gov.

Double Lake is stocked with bass, bream and catfish. There are three fishing piers and a limited access boat ramp with parking nearby for trailers.  Swimmers can relax on a sandy beach after taking a cool plunge. Only boats with small electric motors are allowed on the 23-acre lake.

Showers, drinking water and toilet facilities are located throughout the campground areas.

A 5-mile hiking trail leads to Big Creek Scenic Area, and there is also access to the Lone Star Hiking Trail which offers an opportunity to see the “back country” of East Texas.

An 8-mile mountain bike trail meanders around the lake.

No off-road vehicles are permitted at Double Lake Recreation Area.
