Wilderness Areas

Black Creek

5,050 acre area is the largest of only two designated wilderness areas in Mississippi
Named for the creek that flows through its center, the Black Creek
The wilderness offers solitude among its pine ridges, hardwood bottoms, oxbow lakes, and cypress swamps
Black Creek Trail is the only development in this area *Only foot travel is permitted

Facilities:
Primitive camping is permitted 100 feet off of trail
Fees: None

Directions: Located east of Hwy 29 about 18 miles south of New Augusta and 10 miles north of Wiggins


Leaf

The only other wilderness area in the state which contains 940 acres
Situated primarily within the broad floodplain of the Leaf River which flows to the east
1 ½ mile elevated boardwalk takes visitors deep into meandering sloughs and oxbow lakes

Directions: Located on the east side of Hwy 57 approximately 10 miles north of Benndale and 6 miles south of McLain
