Recreational Activities on the Chickasawhay District

Turkey Fork Recreation Area:

The recreation area is nestled in the tall pines around an inviting 240-acre lake. The clean, clear water of Turkey Fork Lake provides excellent fishing, swimming, and boating opportunities. The lake is stocked with catfish, bass, and bluegill.

Recreational opportunities at Turkey Fork include fishing, water sports, camping, picnicking, and hiking. Special features can be found at each activity area.

With all of these opportunities, a visit to Turkey Fork Recreation Area will provide its visitors with an enjoyable outdoor experience and memories to take home.

 

The campground area provides campers with:

¨ Twenty (20) campsites;
¨ Double Campsites are #1, #6, #12, #19
¨ Fire Grills & Rings, Picnic Tables, Lantern Posts, and Gravel Camping Pads
¨ Electric and Water Hookups (30 amp & 20 amp). -Dump Station
¨ Bathhouse
¨ Paved Accessibility for RV Use
¨ Open Year-Round
¨ Maximum stay - 14 days

The day use area includes:

¨ Twelve (12) secluded picnic areas equipped with tables and grills
¨ Swimming area
¨ Shaded, grassy beach
¨ Bathhouse
¨ Water fountains
¨ Handicapped accessible fishing pier
¨ Open March 1 – December 1:


Hiking

A short hiking trail, less than one mile, connects the Day Use Area to the Campground
Area. The trail provides the hiker with:

¨ A Winding Pathway
¨ Three wooden bridges crossing low areas
¨ A variety of forest and lakeside views
¨ Varying terrain and slopes

Features of the boat launch area are:

¨ Concrete Boat Launch
¨ Large Parking Area
¨ Designated Swim Area
¨ Full Service Bathhouse
¨ Open Year-round, 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.
¨ Skiing - jet ski's are not allowed
¨ Fishing

Turkey Fork Recreation Area is located approximately 40 miles from Hattiesburg, 44 miles from Laurel, and 75 miles from Mobile, Alabama.

From Hattiesburg, travel east on U.S. Hwy. 42 approximately 21 miles to Richton. From Richton, continue east on Hwy. 42 approximately 12 miles to Sandhill. Follow the signs from Sandhill.

From Laurel, travel south on Hwy. 15 approximately 27 miles to Richton. Turn left onto U.S. Hwy 42 and follow the above directions from Richton to Turkey Fork.

From Mobile, Alabama, drive approximately 55 miles on U.S. Hwy. 45 North to the MS-AL state lines and travel west on Hwy. 42 for 19 miles to Mississippi County Road 232. Turn left (south) and travel two miles to Turkey Fork.
