Highlights of the Kisatchie National Forest Heritage Program
| | | | | |
The Kisatchie National Forest Heritage Program is staffed by five Heritage specialists, four of which are assigned to different districts. The Program's management activities center around three topics: stewardship, public outreach, and inventory.
Stewardship activities involve monitoring heritage resources for damage from vandalism or erosion and performing conservation to mitigate any damages. Heritage specialists also ensure that heritage resources are not impacted from Forest Service activities.
The Program gives lectures about archeology and Forest Service history to groups around the area. The Program also regularly sponsors Passport In Time (PIT) projects. Heritage specialists annually participate in Louisiana's Archeology Week.
The Program is also responsible for surveying the land to discover unknown heritage resources. These resources are recorded and evaluated for their placement on the National Register of Historic Places.
An internship is also available for qualified students attending Northwestern State University's Cultural Resource Management Program. The University is located in Natchitoches, LA.
The Kisatchie National Forest
The five Ranger Districts comprising the Kisatchie National Forest are spread across the northern half of Louisiana.
Evidence suggests this area has been inhabited by humans for the past 12,000 years. Forest Service Heritage Resource Specialists have identified and currently manage a wide variety of heritage sites, including prehistoric sites, historic homesteads, evidence of historic logging activities, and Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) camps.
The Program also offers opportunities for the public to share in historic preservation though activities such as Passport In time (PIT) projects or Heritage Expeditions. You can read more about these opportunities in the Passport In Time page.
The Forest Service's Heritage Program is dedicated to preserving the past and providing education about America's Heritage.
