The KNF wildlife program involves management of various kinds for rare species (Endangered, Threatened, Sensitive and Conservation species), game species, and nongame species. Rare species work centers primarily on the red-cockaded woodpecker through annual surveys, habitat work, population augmentation and monitoring of populations and habitat (See separate article on red-cockaded woodpecker management).

Game species across the forest include whitetail deer,Picture of a mature whitetail Buck with velvet antlers wild turkey, quail, dove, woodcock, squirrel and other species. Hunting regulations on the Kisatchie National Forest are found each year in the Louisiana hunting regulations. Two National Wildlife Management Preserves are located on the Forest, on the Catahoula/Winn and Kisatchie Ranger Districts. Hunting in the Preserves requires a State hunting license, and a free permit that can be obtained at the two District Offices or the Supervisor's Picture of a Tom Turkey StruttingOffice in Pineville. Forest Program activities include cooperative work with the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fish and wildlife cooperators (such as the national Wild Turkey Federation, and Quail Unlimited), staffing deer check stations on the wildlife preserves, wildlife seedings, prescribed burning for wildlife, and monitoring habitat conditions and trends.      Non-Game species and wildlife abound on the forest. Salamanders, frogs, turtles, snakes, bats, coyotes, foxes, otters and other animals can be seen in the Forest. Diligent wildlife watchers may also catch a glimpse of a Louisiana black bear, bobcat, wild boar Picture of a young turtle yawningor even herds of escaped horses on the forest. The diversity of upland, riparian and aquatic habitats on the Forest make it an ideal location to view a wide diversity of wildlife across the Forest. Forest Program work for non-game species includes bird and animal surveys, habitat assessments, and cooperative work with the State of Louisiana.

The Kisatchie National Forest is truly a premier location for birdwatchers. Well over a hundred bird species occupy the Picture of an Osprey hovering against the blue skyforest during all seasons of the year. The forest is alive with the sights and sounds of birds. Amateur and professional birdwatchers can spend many days adding to their life list of observed species. A checklist of birds on the Kisatchie Forest can be obtained from any Forest Service office.

Wildlife is a major part of the management of the Kisatchie National Forest. All Forest Service offices are staffed with professional wildlife biologists, as well as technicians, other resource professionals, and volunteers assisting with the wildlife programs. Contact your local Forest Service office for the best opportunities for wildlife hunting and viewing.
