Elizabeth Furnace Group Camping

Elizabeth Furnace offers something for everyone.  There is camping, fishing, hiking and interpretive trails to enjoy. Beginning November 12, 2008, you can make your group site reservations on-line at www.recreation.gov  or call 1-877-444-6777. 

The Lee Ranger District will no longer be making the reservations through the district office. 

The Elizabeth Furnace Group Campground is available to organized groups for outdoor camping by tent only on a reservation and fee basis.  No trailers are allowed in the group camp area  Families and small groups (less than 10 people) should utilize the family campground at Elizabeth Furnace or one of our nearby recreation areas.

***  Currently the group camp has no running water.  Plan on bringing all drinking water with you. *** 

Capacity and Facilities

There are two individual campsites in the group area.

Site A: 50 people
Site B: 25 people

You can reserve one site or both sites depending on the size of your group and the availability of the sites. Groups larger than 75 people will not be accepted.

Centralized facilities include parking, water. Water is available from a hand-pumped well. Toilets are the vault type. Each group site is equipped with tent pads (12' x 16'), fire grate, fire ring and picnic tables. There is no trash service. Visitors are responsible for bagging their trash and packing it out with them when they leave. Groups are urged to bring no more vehicles than needed.
Permits will be issued upon payment of the daily fee established for the area:


1-25 people - $ 30.00/day
26-50 people - $55.00/day
51-75 people - $80 to $85

America the Beautiful Senior and Access passes are not applicable for group camp fees.

The entrance to the campground is gated and locked with a combination lock. The combination will be furnished with the permit. The group leader is responsible for entrance into and exit from the group area. Gate must be locked at all times to prevent un-permitted use.

For reservation, complete the attached form and return with your check. We will then send you the receipt for your fees paid and the lock combination. Refunds are considered only in cases of emergencies (rain does not constitute an emergency). If you must cancel your reservation you may request an application for refund. Complete refund form and attach receipt for fees paid and return to Lee District Office.

You are responsible for knowing and following the Special Conditions of Occupancy and Use listed below.

Elizabeth Furnace Group Camp Special Conditions of Occupancy and Use

1. Occupancy and use of this camp area is prohibited without authorization in the form of a written permit and payment of the established daily fee. Permits will not be issued to groups numbering less than 10 people.

2. Occupancy and use shall be limited to the site or sites; number of persons and days specifically cited on the face of the aforementioned permit. For the purposes of these conditions, a day shall begin at 2:00 pm and end on the succeeding day at 1:59 pm. Payment is based on this 24 hr period.

3. Permits and reservations shall be issued on a first-come, first-serve basis.

4. The entrance gate shall be kept closed and locked except for entrance and exit of vehicles.

5. You are responsible for bagging all trash, garbage and debris and removing it when you depart. This is a Pack-it-in, Pack-it-out facility.

6. Tents shall only be pitched on the tent pad provided for that purpose.

7. The construction of "lean-to's" fire rings, and similar structures using local forest materials is prohibited.

8. Motor vehicles and wheeled camping units shall be confined to that portion of the parking lot designated for the use of that group.

Violation is subject to a penalty of not more than $5000.00 or 6 months imprisonment or both (provision of 16 U.S.C.551): Title 36, Section 261 or CFR.
