National Insect & Disease Risk Map - 2006The second periodic National Insect & Disease Risk Map (NIDRM) was completed in 2006 as a strategic assessment of the risk of tree mortality due to major forest insects and diseases. The NIDRM is compiled from nearly 190 separate models in a GIS-based framework that assigns risk to individual 1-kilometer pixels based on forest type, host species basal area per acres, and various other factors associated with different host species and pests. The risk shown is the expectation that 25% or more of the standing live volume of trees greater than 1” in diameter will die over the next 15 years. Large-scale risk maps for each southern state with county border overlays are accessible below. Pixels are color-coded by the degree of mortality risk. A composite map of mortality risk due to all pests is presented for each state followed by maps for individual important pests.
