Each year the USDA Forest Service-Forest Health Protection (FHP) monitors for insect pests that threaten the health of our National Forests as well as other state and federal lands in the United States. Forest Health Protection in the Southern Region has monitored for one particular insect pest, the Gypsy Moth [Lymantria dispar (Linnaeus)] (more information about the gypsy moth), in the Southern U.S. for over twenty years. The purpose of the Gypsy Moth Detection Program in the Southern Region is to determine if there are isolated gypsy moth infestations outside the generally infested area. Early detection is necessary to prevent the accumulation of damaging populations. Forest Health Protection performs such detection by trapping with Pherocon III D ® traps (more about trap assembly). Traps are deployed in high human activity areas such as campgrounds, recreation areas, and visitor centers. Trapping is conducted in Alabama, Kentucky, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Tennessee, South Carolina, and Virginia by the Army Corps of Engineers (ACOE), Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), U.S. Military, National Park Service (NPS), U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USF&WS), Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA), the Department of Energy (DOE), and the USDA Forest Service. Trap data are forwarded to APHIS and to each State Regulatory Agency, and after review, sent to the National Agricultural Pest Information System, where the latest information can be found pertaining to the current status of gypsy moth.
