Hemlock Woolly Adelgid

First discovered in
the United States in 1924, the hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA) is believed
to be of Asian introduction. The insect is a serious pest of both eastern
hemlock and Carolina hemlock. Many entomologists fear the worst for both
eastern hemlock and Carolina hemlock, believing that HWA holds the potential
for wiping out both tree species. The pest is found in Georgia, North Carolina,
South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia.

Counties are identified
in the Atlas by the year that hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA) is found in the
county. Counties in the Southeast with HWA were mapped starting in 1992
and continuing to the present year. Five states in the southeast have counties
with HWA.The following data items are present in the hemlock woolly adelgid
section of the Atlas:
- FIPS - Numeric
code to identify the state and county
- State_name -
The name of the state containing the county
- Cnty_name - The
name of the county
- Year - The year
HWA was found in the county (Value of zero means HWA has not been found)
NOTE: All
other data items are used internally by the Geographic Information System
software to track the data record.
