Hemlock Woolly Adelgid

* Description

Hemlock Woolly Adelgid Infested Branch
First discovered in the United States in 1924, the hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA) is believed to be of Asian introduction. The insect is a serious pest of both eastern hemlock and Carolina hemlock. Many entomologists fear the worst for both eastern hemlock and Carolina hemlock, believing that HWA holds the potential for wiping out both tree species. The pest is found in Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia.

* Data

Counties are identified in the Atlas by the year that hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA) is found in the county. Counties in the Southeast with HWA were mapped starting in 1992 and continuing to the present year. Five states in the southeast have counties with HWA.The following data items are present in the hemlock woolly adelgid section of the Atlas:
  • FIPS - Numeric code to identify the state and county
  • State_name - The name of the state containing the county
  • Cnty_name - The name of the county
  • Year - The year HWA was found in the county (Value of zero means HWA has not been found)

NOTE: All other data items are used internally by the Geographic Information System software to track the data record.
