Annosus Root Rot
Description
|
|
Annosus
root rot results from a fungus that causes a root and butt rot in
southern pines. The fungus often kills infected trees. Trees that survive
suffer growth loss and are more susceptible to windthrow and bark beetle
attack than uninfected trees. The disease is correlated with soil and
site factors such as soil texture, flooding, and depth to high-water table.
Data
The annousus section
of the Atlas is based on the State Soil Geographic Data Base published
by the Natural Resources Conservation Service. The soil characteristics
used to hazard rate areas for annosus are annual flooding, drainage, and
texture. Areas are rated as either low, medium, or high hazard for annosus.
The section covers all 13 states in the South.
