Forest Health Protection (FHP) is a unit of the USDA Forest Service that employs pest management specialists, forest entomologists and plant pathologists to provide technical assistance in the prevention, detection, evaluation and suppression of forest insect and disease pest problems. FHP in the southern region serves Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and federal lands of Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Southern Pine Beetle South-wide Trend Predictions for 2010

In the South, 2009 was a year of record low levels for southern pine beetle (SPB) activity. Only 445 SPB infestations were reported in 16 states, with South Carolina experiencing the greatest number. Based on our Spring SPB trapping efforts, continued low levels are expected throughout 2010, with the potential for some some increased activity in portions of Georgia, Virginia, South Carolina and New Jersey.
