SwimmingThe Daniel Boone National Forest has three swimming beaches. Two of these are located on Cave Run Lake in the Cumberland Ranger District. They are located at Twin Knobs Recreation Area and Zilpo Recreation Area. Registered campers can swim free of charge. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers maintains a beach at Laurel River Lake on London Ranger District. Kentucky law prohibits the consumption of alcohol in public places and prohibits open containers of alcohol. Recreation Schedule and Fees (pdf) has open dates and fee information for beach use.
SAFETY No lifeguards are on duty. Swimmers should be aware that there can be sharp drop-offs and submerged rocks. Read more... You may also enjoy wading or cooling off in one of the many creeks, streams and rivers in the forest. The "old swimming hole", however, does pose some danger. There may be strong currents and undertows in even the most placid-looking river. Submerged rocks pose a serious danger if you jump or dive in. Sharp drop-offs are the norm, not the exception. Never let a child play, wade or swim in a river or stream without an adult right there, preferrably in the water with them. Kentucky streams and rivers are prone to flood occasionally. Overnight or even in a few hours a stream or river can fill its banks and develop dangerously swift currents and undertows. Please exercise caution.
