Limits of Acceptable Change: March 2006 Newsletter

Dear Friend of the Red River Gorge,

Dear Friend of the Red River Gorge,
We will continue public LAC meetings throughout the spring. The next two dates are set: Tuesday, March 21 and Tuesday, April 25. We will continue with the work we started at the LAC workshops this winter. We will display some more results of the inventory from Step 4 and continue to develop standards for Step 5 (specify measurable standards for resource & social indicators for each opportunity zone).

Step 5 will require several workshops to be conducted throughout the spring. There is a lot of inventory data to review and to interpret. Specifying measurable standards for each opportunity zone will be a key component of the LAC process. In fact, the next two steps of the LAC process (Step 5 - specify standards and Step 6 - identify alternative opportunity zones) are the heart of the whole LAC process. To help prepare for Step 5, you should review the results of the previous three steps. In particular, the results from Step 2 and Step 3 will be important for working through Step 5.

Thank you for your continued involvement in the LAC process!

Tim Eling
Limits of Acceptable Change Coordinator

Next LAC Workshop: April 25, 2006

The next LAC workshop is scheduled for April 25, 2006 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Clark County Cooperative Extension Service in Winchester, KY.
Directions: The Clark County Cooperative Extension Service is located on Fortune Drive, 1/4 mile north of I-64 at exit 96..

A LOOK AHEAD…

After we complete Step 5 this spring and have specified standards for the resource and social conditions for each opportunity zone, we will move on to Step 6. Step 6 is “identifying alternative opportunity zone allocations”. During Step 6 we will be drawing zones on maps and formulating alternatives. The numbers of alternatives are not yet known, but typically range from 2-6. We will develop these alternatives as a group. In order to help participants get a better understanding of where to draw zones in the Red River Gorge, there will be a field trip to the Red River Gorge sometime in late spring or early summer. The field trip will probably be on a Saturday. Feedback on when to do the fieldtrip and where to visit are welcome.
