Fire Safety - Arson

Campfires | Debris Burning | Living with Fire

There are criminals in our woods with matches - arsonists who don't care who or what is harmed. Help us stop them before they hurt someone else, like another firefighter, a friend, or a neighbor.

To report suspicious activity, call the Target Arson hotline at 1-800-27-ARSON. Callers may remain anonymous.

  • Forest fires are a major threat to Kentucky's forests.
  • The average number of wildland fires in Kentucky each year is 1,447.
  • Arson is the number one cause of wildland fires in Kentucky. Ninety percent of all wildfires in Kentucky are human caused.
  • The second leading cause of wildland fires is uncontrolled debris burning.
  • 2001 was the worst fire year in Kentucky in the last decade. 178,925 acres burned, of those, 146,058 acres were attributed to arson.
  • Unlike firefighting in the western United States, hand crews put out most of the wildland fires in Kentucky. Aircraft assistance is used only in extreme situations.

Arsonists are the same individuals who vandalize road signs, shoot livestock and wildlife from the road, and burglarize rural homes. Citizen cooperation with all law enforcement agencies is essential. Arsonists have to know that Kentuckians will not tolerate their activities. In some areas, arsonists set fire to the forest at any time of the day or night without fear of prosecution. Until they can't trust anyone to remain silent, arsonist's activities will continue.
