Mary Arthur is a Professor of forest ecology at the University of Kentucky and lead investigator for this study. She has been working in the field of fire ecology in the Appalachian region since 1995, collaborating closely in those research efforts with managers for the Daniel Boone National Forest, with David Loftis, and with Heather Alexander.
These research efforts have resulted in15 publications in peer-reviewed journals, 3 in preparation, 7 MS theses, and 1 PhD dissertation.

Heather Alexander is a Post-doctoral fellow at the University of Florida. She conducted extensive research in the Daniel Boone National Forest from as part of her dissertation research and continues to investigate the role of fire disturbances on tree regeneration and the impacts of canopy shifts on ecological processes in this region.

David Loftis was Project Leader of the Ecology and Management of Southern Appalachian Forests Research Work Unit of the U.S.D.A. Forest Service Southern Research Station located on the Bent Creek Experimental Forest near Asheville, NC.
He has been conducting regeneration research in the Southern Appalachians for more than 25 years. Most of the research has focused on oak regeneration, and he designed and installed one of the few experiments on oak regeneration that used fire as one of the treatments.

EJ Bunzendahl is the Daniel Boone National Forest Staff Officer for Natural Resources. She provides oversight for all fire and timber activities. She works closely with Mary Arthur to plan and implement the technology transfer items.
