Fire Learning Network
The Daniel Boone National Forest has partnered with The Nature Conservancy to participate in a Fire Learning Network for the Central Appalachian region of the United States. The network is a community-based approach to address the natural role of fire and its benefits to the landscape. As a collaborative process, regional fire networks across the country are tackling some of the most critical issues related to fire and its use an effective tool for natural resource management. The Kentucky portion of the fire network is called the Cumberland River Fire Learning Network Site, spanning over 251,000 acres in four counties of southeastern Kentucky: Pulaski, McCreary, Laurel and Whitley. The area encompasses state, federal and privately-owned lands. Private landowners, land managers and other interested parties are encouraged to participate in the Fire Learning Network. Full participation will require some commitment of time, including meetings and workshops over a two-year span. Agencies and organizations currently participating as core members of the Cumberland River Fire Learning Network Site include:
Any group or individual interested in becoming a member of the core team for the Cumberland River Fire Learning Network Site may contact John Omer, wildlife biologist on the London Ranger District, at (606) 864-4163.
