Map showing the Willamette Province areaThe Willamette Province is one of twelve planning provinces in Washington, Oregon and California identified in the Record of Decision for Amendments to Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management Planning Documents Within the Range of the Northern Spotted Owl (more commonly referred to as the ROD, or Northwest Forest Plan

Each province is a geographic area -- usually several river basins -- having a similar set of biophysical characteristics and processes due to the effects of climate and geology. The Willamette Province includes the entire basin of the Willamette River, extending from the crest of the Coast Range to the crest of the Cascades mountains. Also included are some tributaries of the Columbiasystem including the Sandy and Scappoose Rivers.

The Northwest Forest Plan encourages agencies to work together in an integrated manner. The Province Interagency Executive Committee (PIEC) coordinates the management of federal lands in the Province. The PIECs are composed of Forest Supervisors, BLM District Managers and other federal agency executives, including the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the National Marine Fisheries Service, the Bureau of Indian Affairs, the Army Corps of Engineers, the Environmental Protection Agency, and the National Park Service.

To better involve public concerns and knowledge into the implementation of the Northwest Forest Plan, each province also includes a Province Advisory Committee (referred to as the PAC). Each advisory committee is composed of representatives of public interest groups that have resource management perspectives important to implementation of the plan. The membership of the PAC includes:

  • Federal Executives from the PIEC
  • Recreation and Tourism
  • Native American Tribes
  • County Commissioners
  • Forest Products Industry
  • State Government
  • Environmental Groups
  • Other Federal Agencies

Both the PIEC and the PAC meet on a bimonthly basis to share information and discuss issues related to implementation of the Northwest Forest Plan.
