Forest Supervisor Signs Record of Decision for Approval
of
Anthony Lakes Mountain Resort
Master
Development Plan
Baker
City, November 19—On November 9, 2001,Wallowa-Whitman National Forest
Supervisor Karyn Wood signed the Record of Decision (ROD) for the Anthony
Lakes Mountain Resort Master Development Plan Final Environmental Impact
Statement (FEIS).
The FEIS documents the environmental analysis for future management
activities of the Anthony Lakes Mountain Resort on the Baker Ranger District.
The ski resort is located approximately 19 miles west of North Powder,
Oregon, and 35 miles northwest of Baker City, Oregon, in the Elkhorn Mountains
of northeast Oregon.
Wood stated, “Anthony Lakes Mountain Resort has taken great pride in
improving and upgrading the ski area since the resort was purchased by the
present owners in June 1998. Approval
and implementation of the Master Development Plan will further enhance the
public’s recreational experience at Anthony Lakes.”
Forest Supervisor Wood selected Alternative C for implementation of the
Master Development Plan. Implementation
of this alternative will accomplish the following:
·
Balance resort-wide capacities; adding ski lifts to better use
downhill terrain; reduce long lift lines; allow for better use of up-mountain
terrain; and provide useable beginner terrain.
·
Provide
basic infrastructure for resort capacity, such as utilities, parking,
enlargement of lodge and maintenance facilities, increased sewage capability,
and increased water storage capability.
·
Serve a comfortable
carrying capacity of 1200 skiers per day.
·
Enhance Nordic operations.
Implementation of these activities would allow for more full utilization
of terrain, distribution of skiers across the ski slopes, and supporting
infrastructure.
Rick Pignone, Ski Area Manager, remarked, “ALMR ownership and
management are really looking forward to seeing the EIS phase completed and
moving forward with further improvements to the Anthony Lakes Ski Area.”
Public comments did not necessitate development of new issues,
alternatives, or information. Therefore,
the draft is being released as the FEIS, with changes captured in the Errata
Sheets. The FEIS includes these
changes and corrections, as well as the comments and comment letters.
Alternative C does not include snowmobile rentals.
The decision to implement Alternative C is subject to appeal.
The appeal period for this decision ends January 4, 2002. Information on
how to appeal the decision is found in the Record of Decision.
