Horseshoe
Prairie
Horseshoe Prairie is a Nordic ski area located on the Umatilla National
Forest seven miles south of Tollgate, OR on the west side of State Highway
204 . The Walla Walla District Ranger began managing Horseshoe Prairie
as a Nordic ski area in the late 1980’s when cross-country skiing
and snowshoeing activities were increasing in popularity. At that time,
the only marked and groomed trails available in the area were located
at Spout Springs Ski Area. There was also a segment of Nordic skiers that
preferred to ski on ungroomed trails in a remote environment. Many such
skiers combine this activity with remote winter camping.
Horseshoe Prairie was selected for this type of remote Nordic recreation
because of its gentle terrain and easy access to a Sno-park. Also, at
the time of its Nordic ski area designation, snowmobilers use on the prairie
was light and local snowmobile clubs agreed to discourage use by local
members. Consequently, a trail system was identified and marked and a
brochure was developed including a map of the area.
