Rector, C. M. 1960. Multiple use management on Dale Ranger District of the Umatilla National Forest. 495019. USDA, Forest Service, Umatilla National Forest. Locality: [Desolation Creek below Desolation Meadows].
Abstract: These four black-and-white photographs were acquired by Rector on August 29, 1960. They show a typical summer-time scene on Desolation Creek in the vicinity of Desolation Meadows, North Fork John Day Ranger District. Each of the four prints are of excellent quality – the foreground, middleground, and background scenes are all in sharp focus. In this image, there are two mounted horseback riders in western wear (jeans, plaid shirts, cowboy hats and boots) near a small group of cattle that are grazing in the meadow. The creek banks in the foreground portion of this image bear obvious evidence of heavy use by cattle and horses (exposed soil with hoof prints, etc.). In the middleground and background portions of the image, grazing cattle are clearly evident. Near the edge of the creek and in the water is a fisherman (William Walker Hinton) wearing hip-height waders, a wide-brimmed hat, and a straw creel. He has a fishing pole and is apparently fishing. The background shows solid, dense, continous conifer forest beyond the extent of the meadow. The second image shows George Hinton on horseback in western wear with his horse, Sugar, standing on the creek bank. The third image is of George Hinton, with his horse drinking from the creek itself. A black or dark-colored dog is standing near the horse. In the fourth image, George and Fern Hinton are on horseback talking to William.

Reid, E. H. 1938. General views of sheep grazing in the range study area, Tenderfoot sheep allotment, Wallowa National Forest. 372024. U.S. Department of Agriculture, Forest Service, Wallowa-Whitman National Forest. Locality: Tenderfoot Basin. Size: 8" x 10".
Abstract: This black-and-white photograph was acquired by Reid in August of 1938. It shows "general views of sheep grazing in the range study area. Tenderfoot Sheep Allotment, Wallowa National Forest, Oregon." This photograph was taken to document sheep grazing impacts in the Tenderfoot Basin area of the Wallowa Mountains of northeastern Oregon; Tenderfoot Basin is a high-elevation area near the headwaters of the North Fork of the Imnaha River. Vegetation in the basin is typical of much of the subalpine zone in the high Wallowa Mountains – large expanses of green fescue grassland interspersed with subalpine fir and whitebark pine trees. It was ordered from the National Archives because it provides a good example of sheep grazing impacts sustained during the 1920s and 1930s, when domestic livestock grazing was widespread in northeastern Oregon. This print is of good quality – most areas in the scene are in sharp focus, although one portion of the background has a dark area that could be a cloud shadow or it could indicate a flaw in the negative. The background shows open grassland areas interspersed primarily with scattered whitebark pine trees, both alive and dead. The middleground and background scenes show sheep trailing across areas and raising dust clouds as they do so. Rocky areas that apparently have suffered soil erosion are also evident in the foreground.

Rohn, Don C. 1926. Price Ranger Station. USDA, Forest Service, Umatilla National Forest. Size: 8" x 10".
Abstract: Very little is known about this photograph. The only information was on the front of the photograph was the year "1926" and "Price Ranger." Hand-written notations on the back of the photograph included "Don C. Rohn, Price Ranger Station, 1926." The photograph depicts two horses, one with rider and saddle and the other with a pack, posing near a log structure with a wooden-shingle roof. The area immediately adjacent to the structure had apparently been overgrazed for a period because it supports a dense stand of western coneflower (Rudbeckia occidentalis), an allelopathic plant that increases following grazing and other disturbances. Behind the structure is a dense stand of Engelmann spruce and subalpine fir. The print quality is good; both the foreground and background portions are in sharp focus.

Rohn, Don C. 1930. Target Meadows? USDA, Forest Service, Umatilla National Forest. Locality: T. 4 N., R. 38 E., sec. 28. Size: 8" x 10".
Abstract
: Very little is known about this photograph. The only notation was a hand written note on the back of the photograph stating "Don C. Rohn, Target [Largest?] Mds, 1930." It is unknown if the name on the back of the photograph is the person on the horse or the person who took the picture. The photograph depicts two horses, one with rider and saddle and the other with a pack, posing in a high-elevation meadow area with a dense stand of Engelmann spruce and subalpine fir in the background. Lying on the ground next to the horse with rider is a dog. The print quality is moderate; both the foreground and background portions are in relatively good focus.
