Historic Photos - FILLOON
Filloon, Ray. 1936. Forest
Survey type mapper sketching in pine woodlands on the edge
of the desert.
320940. USDA, Forest Service,
Okanogan National Forest. Locality: Near Tonasket, Washington.
Size: 8" x 10".
Abstract: This black-and-white photograph was acquired
by Filloon on April 20, 1936. It shows a "Forest Survey
type mapper sketching in pine woodlands on the edge of the
desert. The open areas of sagebrush with small portions of
pine timber along the draws in characteristic Forest Survey
type 5?; ponderosa pine, woodland. Taken about 10 miles from
Tonasket, Washington." This photograph appeared as figure
1 (page 5) in a publication entitled "Forest
resources of the ponderosa pine region of Washington and Oregon" by
Cowlin, Briegleb, and Moravets (1942). The figure caption in
the publication was "Forest survey field man mapping pine
woodland on the desert's edge. The open areas of sagebrush
and other shrubs with clusters of pine trees in the draws are
typical of the woodland type of ponderosa pine." It was
ordered from the National Archives because it shows a good
example of ponderosa pine forest intermixed with grassland
and shrubland areas occupying sites with shallow soils. This
print is of excellent quality – the foreground, middleground,
and background scenes are all in sharp focus.

A ponderosa pine stand containing some western larch.
320935. U.S. Department of Agriculture, Forest Service, Colville
National Forest. Locality: Shovel Creek. Size: 8" x 10".
Abstract: This black-and-white photograph
was acquired by Filloon on April 20, 1936. It shows a "ponderosa
pine stand containing some western larch, near Shovel Creek,
Colville National Forest. Trees range from 28" to 40" in
d.b.h. Forest survey type 20; ponderosa pine, large." This
photograph appeared as figure 7 (page 20) in a publication
entitled "Forest
resources of the ponderosa pine region of Washington and Oregon" by
Cowlin, Briegleb, and Moravets (1942). The figure caption in
the publication was "a mixed ponderosa pine and larch
stand (type 20) in eastern Washington." It was ordered
from the National Archives because it shows a good example
of a mixed pine/larch stand that had been frequently underburned,
e.g., large diameter pines and larches growing above a sward
of grass (probably pinegrass). This print is of excellent quality – the
foreground, middleground, and background scenes are all in
sharp focus. The background shows an extensive area of smaller
trees, which appear to be Douglas-firs and perhaps grand firs
that have apparently invaded the stand as a result of fire
suppression.

A subalpine forest near Bird Creek Meadows composed of lodgepole
pine, whitebark pine, mountain hemlock, and alpine fir.
321041. USDA, Forest Service. Size: 8" x 10". Abstract:
This black-and-white photograph was acquired by Filloon on
April 20, 1936. It shows "a subalpine forest near Bird
Creek Meadows composed of lodgepole pine, whitebark pine, mountain
hemlock, and alpine fir. Forest Survey type 33; subalpine." This
photograph appeared as figure 15 (page 25) in a publication
entitled "Forest
resources of the ponderosa pine region of Washington and Oregon" by
Cowlin, Briegleb, and Moravets (1942). The figure caption in
the publication was "Subalpine forest of alpine fir and
whitebark pine." It was ordered from the National Archives
because it provides a good example of high-elevation forest
sites indicative of the subalpine zone in eastern Oregon and
eastern Washington. This print is of excellent quality – all
areas in the scene are in sharp focus, and contrast and brightness
are also good. The background shows a forest/grassland mosaic
with dense to moderate forest communities interspersed with
open areas dominated by grassland. The foreground shows seedlings
and saplings of primarily subalpine fir that are colonizing
the grassland portion of the mosaic. Note: the exact location
of this photograph is unknown; other than Bird Creek Meadows,
the only location information was that it was someplace in
Washington state.

Loaded logging truck and diesel converted shovel loader
handling
ponderosa pine logs from 40% cutting on Malheur N.F.
348268. USDA, Forest Service, Malheur
National Forest. Locality: Near Seneca, Oregon. Size: 8" x
10". Abstract:
This black-and-white photograph was acquired by Filloon on
June 3, 1937. It shows a "loaded logging truck and diesel
converted shovel loader handling ponderosa pine logs from 40%
cutting on Malheur N.F. near Seneca, Oregon." This photograph
appeared as figure 29 (page 63) in a publication entitled "Forest
resources of the ponderosa pine region of Washington and Oregon" by
Cowlin, Briegleb, and Moravets (1942). The figure caption in
the publication was "Loading ponderosa pine logs on truck
with a Diesel converted shovel loader." It was ordered
from the National Archives because it provides a good example
of ponderosa pine logging technology during the late 1920s
and early 1930s, when some form of partial cutting was in vogue.
This print is of poor quality – it appears that the negative
was covered by a felt-like fungus or some other form of deterioration.
The result is a dendritic pattern that looks like a snowflake.
Most of the actual image can still be viewed, although the
surface discoloration renders it useless for some purposes.

Nick Meyer's portable tie mill near La Pine, Oregon.
348163. USDSA, Forest Service, Deschutes
National Forest. Size: 8" x 10". Abstract:
This black-and-white photograph was acquired by Filloon on
May 28, 1937. It shows "Nick Meyer's portable tie mill
near La Pine, Oregon. Cuts approximately 300 ties per day.
3 men at machine – one sawyer, one offbearer, and one
stacker. Four horses used singly to yard logs short distance
from woods." This photograph appeared as figure 30 (page
63) in a publication entitled "Forest
resources of the ponderosa pine region of Washington and Oregon" by
Cowlin, Briegleb, and Moravets (1942). The figure caption in
the publication was "Portable tie mill which cuts approximately
300 ties a day. Three men operate it – a sawyer, offbearer,
and stacker. Four horses, used singly, yard logs from the woods." It
was ordered from the National Archives because it provides
a good example of forest logging and conversion technology
during the late 1920s and early 1930s, when some form of partial
cutting was in vogue. This print is of good quality – most
areas in the scene are in sharp focus. The background shows
a moderately-dense stand with large-diameter ponderosa pines
in the overstory and what appears to be a mix of pole-sized
and larger ponderosa pines and lodgepole pines in the understory.
Shrubs are also evident in the foreground; they appear to be
short-stature (perhaps browsed?) bitterbrush plants.

Reserve stand after Forest Service standard 80% cutting. 348253.
U.S. Department of Agriculture, Forest Service, Malheur National
Forest. Locality: Near Seneca, Oregon. Size: 8" x 10".
Abstract: This black-and-white photograph
was acquired by Filloon on June 2, 1937. It shows a "reserve
stand adjoining picture #393 (348252) after Forest Service
standard 80% cutting. Malheur N.F. near Seneca, Oregon." This
photograph appeared as figure 34 (page 69) in a publication
entitled "Forest
resources of the ponderosa pine region of Washington and Oregon" by
Cowlin, Briegleb, and Moravets (1942). The figure caption in
the publication was "Reserve stand after removal of 80
percent of the volume, Malheur National Forest." It was
ordered from the National Archives because it shows a good
example of ponderosa pine forest management during the late
1920s and early 1930s, when some form of partial cutting was
in vogue. This print is of moderate quality – it is in
sharp focus throughout, but the contrast and brightness could
be better.

Filloon,
Ray M. 1937. Reserve stand of ponderosa pine after 40% cutting
on Malheur
N.F. near Seneca, Oregon. 347937. USDA, Forest Service,
Malheur National Forest. Size: 8" x 10". Abstract:
This black-and-white photograph was acquired by Filloon on
June 2, 1937. It shows a "reserve stand of ponderosa pine
after 40% cutting on Malheur N.F. near Seneca, Oregon. Fine
reserve stand of Keen's class 2 and 3 trees with numerous A
and B crowns. Note few stumps and very small amount of slash." This
photograph appeared as figure 35 (page 70) in a publication
entitled "Forest
resources of the ponderosa pine region of Washington and Oregon" by
Cowlin, Briegleb, and Moravets (1942). The figure caption in
the publication was "Reserve stand after 40 percent cutting.
Trees felled were high in quality and large in size." It
was ordered from the National Archives because it shows a good
example of ponderosa pine forest management during the late
1920s and early 1930s, when some form of partial cutting was
in vogue. Note that the reference to Keen tree classes referred
to a tree classification system in common usage at that time.
Keen's system, which was based on tree vigor, provided an estimate
of tree risk to attack from western pine beetle (see accessions
by Keen, particularly a Journal
of Forestry article in 1936, for more information about
this system). This print is of moderate quality – it
is in sharp focus throughout, but the contrast could be better.
