photo: Cover of Geologic Field Trip GuideGeologic Field Trip Guide - Ukiah to Granite (PDF 630kb)This field trip begins at the historic settlement of Ukiah and ends at the equally historic gold mining camp of Granite. Ukiah owes its existence to the inter-mixed grasslands and stands of Ponderosa pine atop a blanket of relatively recent (7,000 years ago) volcanic ash and older basalt lava flows. Granite owes its existence to the gold washed out of veins in the ancient basement rocks. Between the two, both in distance and in time, lies Tower Mountain; a large, heavily forested rhyolite volcano. Visit the Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries for an extended version of this field trip. http://www.oregongeology.com/sub/fieldtrips/ukiah-granite/default.htm

Campgrounds on the Umatilla National Forest: Forest visitors can select from over 20 campgrounds designed to blend with the forest environment. Most campgrounds are located away from traffic and commercial development where there is fishing, hunting, or other outdoor activities nearby. Camping is also allowed in most dispersed areas throughout the Forest. Campfire permits are not required, but campfires may be restricted during extreme fire danger.
